How to Trust Your Intuition and Banish Self-Doubt

How to Trust Your Intuition and Banish Self-Doubt

Let me ask you a question. How often does it happen that you have some kind of gut feeling or intuitive impression buy you’re hesitant to speak up?

I’m guessing it happens a lot. That’s why you’re here.

You know in your heart of hearts that you ARE an intuitive. That you truly CAN receive divine guidance for yourself and others. That you DO receive psychic information – information about people, things, or events that turn out to be right.

But here’s the thing. You doubt yourself. You doubt that any of those things are true. And so you keep quiet. You limit yourself.

Do any of these thoughts sound familiar to you?

  • “What if I’m wrong?”

  • “What if they think I’m bonkers?”

  • “Is it really intuition or just my imagination?”

I thought so.

You don’t let your intuition come out and shine because you don’t trust it, you don’t always know how to identify when something is intuition, and you don’t feel confident about communicating the message or acting on it even if you do.

I’m right, aren’t I?

Well, you know what? I got your back! I totally understand where this is coming from because I felt it too when I was first learning about intuition and psychic development.

I had this crippling fear that I’d be wrong when doing intuitive readings and that I’m not really an intuitive and I’m just deluded.

Guess what? If I can learn to push that doubt aside and trust my intuition implicitly so can you! I’m gonna share with you some of my best tips on how to achieve that.

Doubt not only makes you feel under-confident but being in the energy of doubt actually blocks you from receiving intuitive messages and guidance.

How Doubt Actually Blocks Intuition

Ego Mind vs Spirit Mind

Doubt not only makes you feel under-confident but being in the energy of doubt actually blocks you from receiving intuitive messages and guidance.

Why? You see Spirit operates at a very high vibration.

What do we mean by high vibration?

Well, it’s sort of a spectrum of frequency where on one end you have fear-based emotions and on the other end, you have love-based emotions. Source energy is love energy.

Therefore, spirit guides, angels, and other high vibration beings operate at the frequency of love. When you are in the energy of fear you’re stopping yourself from being able to connect with them.

I studied mediumship under James Van Praagh and one thing he talks about is Human Mind vs Spirit Mind. Human Mind being fear-based and ego-based and Spirit Mind being love-based, as I said. He says that the fear of being wrong is the number one thing stopping mediums from being able to receive information.

Think about it, if you’re spending time worrying about whether you’re right, whether you’re really an intuitive or not, rather than paying attention to the intuitive signals you’re not exactly making the mental space for Spirit?

The first step is that when you’re doing a reading or actively trying to connect to Source energy, to try your best to place your doubts aside temporarily and just focus on paying attention to any information coming in through your intuitive channels.

Identify When Your Intuition is Talking to You

The next step is to pay attention to your intuitive channels and to realise when something is intuition as opposed to just your human thoughts.

Intuition comes in via what we call the four clairs. Just as you have physical senses you have intuitive senses as well. These are:

  • Clairvoyance: Clairvoyance is your spiritual sight. Clairvoyants are visual intuitives who tend to receive information as images within their mind's eye.

  • Clairaudience: Clairaudience is your spiritual hearing. Clairaudients are auditory intuitives who tend to receive information as sounds, thoughts, or phrases in their mind.

  • Claircognizance: Claircognizance is your spiritual sense of knowing. Claircognizants tend to simply know things to be true without there being any local explanation for it. Claircognizants receive information as direct downloads from the spiritual realm.

  • Clairsentience: Clairsentience is your spiritual sense of feeling. Clairsentients receive information as physical sensations in their body like a gut feeling, goosebumps, or elevated heart rate.

I go into greater depth into these four types of intuition in this article. If you’re not sure which one you are, take this quiz to help you identify your dominant intuitive sense.

The key thing you need to realise is that intuitive information is subtle. It can easily be mistaken for your own mind if you don’t know what to look for!

It’s a total myth to expect psychic information to come via some huge booming voice or obvious vision. Spirit works with the tools you already have in order to get the message across.

Here are some general things to look out for:

  • Recognising clairvoyance: The images you get may seem like your imagination at first but if you pay attention, you’ll notice that spirit guides, angels, passed loved ones, ancestors, etc, look as if they’re in technicolour – realer than real – as compared to your ordinate imaginative musings.

  • Recognising clairaudience: You will not physically hear anything and the messages you get will sound like it’s your own internal voice. With spirit messages, it feels like the ‘voice’ or ‘thought’ is coming from the crown chakra area. Normal thoughts feel to me as if they come from lower in the brain.

  • Recognising claircognizance: Claircognizance is when you have a perfect, clear, moment where you just know what to do or a flood of ideas that come when you’re in a state of relaxation, e.g. in the shower. Don’t ignore those ideas! It’s claircognizance.

  • Recognising clairsentience: With clairsentience, you want to pay attention to how your body and your emotions feel at different moments and around different people, things, or situations. Does it feel open in your solar plexus area or tight and heavy? Do you get tingles or a sensation when looking at a certain thing? That’s intuition.

I actually have a whole article going into that topic in great depth, so I won’t spend too much time on it here.

But the key thing is in order to be confident in trusting your intuition, you need to know how it comes I and what it’s telling you in the first place.

Your one job is simply to give your interpretation as best you can whether it comes from the tarot cards, your intuition, or a combination of both. It really doesn’t matter where it comes from or what they think of it. If you do that, you have done your job.

Give It a Go and Just Try to Share Your Intuitive Impressions

This is the place where many people trip up. You get an intuitive hit, you have received a message, but you hesitate in speaking up because you’re worried you may be wrong.

Here’s the thing: you won’t find out if your message has relevance unless you give it a go and communicate it, will you?

It’s a negative cycle. You get an intuitive impression but keep it to yourself because you worry about being wrong but you can’t exactly get validated for being right and improve your accuracy without sharing your impressions.

Here’s where the two magic words come in: just try. Just give it a shot, just give it a go, try to share your intuitive impressions and see where it leads you.

When I first started doing free tarot readings for practice, I was also learning about intuition, and I would sometimes get intuitive impressions on top of what the cards were saying.

Something inside me urged me to “just try”, just ask the querent if it means something to them and see where it leads me. It was a little voice inside me that encouraged me to just give it a go. I have nothing to lose anyway the reading is free.

When I followed that feeling and shared my intuitive impression I turned out to be right! That felt great! If I never shared my impressions with the querent I wouldn’t have gotten the validation that I needed.

It DOES feel scary to put yourself out where when you’re not even sure you’re right but the thing is that you fear that someone will tell you that you’re outrageously inaccurate, a fraud, or crazy but in my experience, no one ever told me that.

All the resistance and is completely baseless.

One thing that helped me get over that resistance is to communicate my impression in a very low-pressure way by posing a question.

Instead of saying outright that you received a clairsentient sign, for example, you could just ask them: “I’m feeling like X, does that mean something to you?”. In the beginning, I did this all the time, as I became more confident I started being more open about what it was I was experiencing.

Also, realise that some things may not make sense to them now but it may make sense to them later. Or, it does resonate but they don’t tell you about it until they come for the next reading. This happens a lot.

The second thing is recognising that my job is just to pass on the message and share my interpretation of their situation based on the tarot as well as my psychic impressions.

This is what they pay for – for your interpretation.

Your one job is simply to give your interpretation as best you can whether it comes from the tarot cards, your intuition, or a combination of both. It really doesn’t matter where it comes from or what they think of it. If you do that, you have done your job.

Coming to this realisation took a lot of pressure off for me in terms of feeling better about sharing my psychic impressions.

I have another article that digs very deep into this topic so I encourage you to read it.

Practice Makes Perfect

The final thing I have to say to you right now is that confidence in your abilities is something you build through practice.

In order to truly feel confident about your abilities you need to do readings for people, you need to share your impressions with others, so that you can get feedback and validation.

The thing is that doubt doesn’t fully ever go away. You’d think that a person who has done many readings doesn’t feel fear but it’s still there.

An inexperienced intuitive may feel a crippling level of doubt and fear. As that intuitive gains practice, they will start feeling more confident and that doubting voice will diminish. When they become an experienced intuitive that feeling of fear and doubt lasts no more than a moment.

An experienced intuitive has gotten enough good feedback to know that the fear of being wrong is totally baseless and knows how to push that fear aside and get on with the reading.

That’s the key. You just need to practice often enough to get to a point where you know not to pay attention to your doubt.

Your next steps are to gain as much practice as you can bearing in mind the tips and strategies I mention in this article. Did it help you? Do let me know!
