How to Read Any Tarot Card Using Your Intuition

How to Read Any Tarot Card Using Your Intuition

You’ve tried reading several tarot books, you’ve tried your best to memorise the tarot card meanings but nothing sticks.

When you do a reading you look at the cards before you and your mind goes blank. What did that card mean again?

Then you get frustrated at yourself for not remembering and for not being able to interpret your reading without consulting the book at least once.

And even when you do remember the card meaning, you’ve been learning them based off of the original Rider Waite Smith deck’s artwork and symbolism. You look at your deck and you feel doubt.

I don’t know…my intuition tells me one thing, I feel one thing when I look at this card, but the book tells me another thing.

So, what are you to do? How are you meant to understand the tarot card meanings?

Don’t ignore your intuition because it is the key to being able to learn tarot quickly and being able to interpret tarot card meanings with ease and confidence.

In this article I’ll tell you a bit more about understanding tarot card meanings with your intuition and I’ll reveal the three essential steps you need to easily do a reading without looking up the card meaning even once, and not only that, but be confident in your interpretation.

Intuitive tarot reading helps you learn tarot quickly because instead of trying to force the traditional card meanings onto your deck, which may have a different depiction, you are simply interpreting the image you see before you and letting that be your guide.

Why Intuitive Tarot Reading Helps You Lean Tarot Quickly

There was a time when I was initially learning tarot and I felt exactly the way you did. Stuck trying to reconcile my own deck with the traditional card meanings and unable to finish a reading without looking up at least one card.

Learning how to read tarot intuitively accelerated my tarot reading capabilities and it also helped me to develop my intuition and psychic abilities.

The two things go hand in hand and reading tarot in this way was, for me, like a magic bullet.

But why?

See, the original Rider Waite Smith deck was created, what, 100 years ago more or less? For a long time, people read tarot with only that original deck.

For those people, in those times, it made sense to read books that explained the symbolism used in the original deck.

But can you tell me how many different tarot decks exist today? You can’t. Because there are too many to count.

Deck creators today use the original Rider Waite Smith deck’s symbolism and meanings as a springboard for their own interpretations. Each and every deck creator has their own spin on the tarot card meanings visible in the artwork they create. That it why it is futile to try to force the traditional card meaning onto every deck. It’s like trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

Even slight differences in the visual depiction of a card can have a huge impact on the card meaning associated with it.

Why? Because we humans are visual creatures. We derive meaning based on what we see.

Let’s say you’re looking at a painting and your guidebook says the painting depicts a rushing river symbolising force and movement. A local artist has painted their own rendition of the original and has painted a gentle stream.

Yet you insist that the painting still symbolises force and movement despite the fact that a gentle stream is the farthest thing from a rushing river.

Do you see what I mean?

That’s where intuition comes in. Intuitive tarot reading helps you learn tarot quickly because instead of trying to force the traditional card meanings onto your deck, which may have a different depiction, you are simply interpreting the image you see before you and letting that be your guide.

Intuitive tarot reading involves allowing yourself to be open to the artist’s spin on the original card meaning and as well as paying careful attention to your thoughts and feelings in relation to the image.

When you allow yourself to read tarot in this way, learning tarot and doing a reading without looking up card meanings becomes a piece of cake!

3 Essential Steps for Intuitive Tarot Reading

3 Essential Steps for Intuitive Tarot Card Meanings

Okay, now that we understand the why of it all, let’s get into the how. There are three basic steps you need to be able to interpret any tarot card using your intuition.

  1. Describe the scene

  2. Look for visual cues

  3. Pay attention to your psychic senses

1. Describe the Scene

The most basic step of interpreting a tarot card intuitively is this: just describe what’s going on!

The act of simply describing what is happening in a scene helps you to focus in on the card, and as you do so, you’ll find yourself drawing your own conclusions about the meaning.

Every card is like a single scene in a movie or one frame in a comic. It’s not static but living. Things are happening in the scene.

Take the Fool, for example. If I were to describe this card, I might come up with the following:

A colourfully dressed man is walking in the mountains with his eyes closed. The sun is shining bright on a wonderful cloudless day. The man’s face is serene as he appears to be enjoying the warmth of the sun. He holds a rose in one hand. In the other hand he is holding his belongings tied to a stick. He seems to be embarking on a journey and travelling light. His dog is with him and appears to be staring at him because the man is about to walk off a cliff. He doesn’t see the cliff edge as his eyes are closed.

Right so now let’s break this down. I don’t know about you but I noticed a few things already than can suggest a meaning. Let’s create some keywords based on this description.

  • Carefree: The man’s face is serene as he appears to be enjoying the warmth of the sun.

  • Journey or new beginnings: In the other hand he is holding his belongings tied to a stick. He seems to be embarking on a journey and travelling light.

  • Recklessness: He doesn’t see the cliff edge as his eyes are closed.

See how easy that was?

Maybe you picked up on other things or you have your ideas about the meaning, different to mine. That’s okay!

Two people can look at the same card, pick up on different aspects, and form two different interpretations. Neither person is wrong! In fact, this is what makes tarot accurate: the ability to form completely unique interpretations based on the same card.

The act of simply describing what is happening in a scene helps you to focus in on the card, and as you do so, you’ll find yourself drawing your own conclusions about the meaning.

2. Look for Visual Cues

Right, now let’s go deeper shall we? We’ve described the overall clues. Now let’s look for visual cues.

In tarot reading, a visual cue is one or more details within an individual card that grabs your attention. The idea is to focus your interpretation around the thoughts, feelings, and ideas that one symbol brings up to create greater depth in your reading.

Your intuition may pick up on individual details in the picture. Pay attention because your intuition will not point something out to you for no reason!

If something specific in the image catches your eye, ask yourself what you associate with that visual cue and how it changes your interpretation of the card.

Let’s go back to our Fool. Suppose that when looking at the image my eye kept going to the sun shining on the Fool. The sun becomes my visual cue.

How does that change the overall interpretation? I might focus my interpretation on optimism and being carefree rather than recklessness or the new beginnings aspect of the card meaning.

Do you see now how it works? It’s easy!

3. Pay Attention to Your Psychic Senses

The last step is paying attention to your psychic senses. Think you’re not psychic? Think again because each and every one of us is!

It’s just a matter of knowing what to look for and practice. What starts out as intuition becomes psychic ability (a stronger version of intuition) when you practice.

One way to practice is knowing what to look for and simply paying attention to what you receive through your psychic senses:

The physical body and senses are physical manifestations of the spiritual body and senses. Just as you have various kinds of physical senses, you also have various types of spiritual senses.

Psychic impressions come through clairvoyance (visions), clairaudience (words), clairsentience (feelings), or claircognizance (thoughts and inner knowingness). If you want to learn more about that, then read this article which covers this topic in great detail.

For now, you need to know that sometimes during a tarot reading you may receive information relating to the card meaning or reading in general in the form of:

  • Words or phrases that enter your mind.

  • Sensations or emotions you feel as you look at the cards.

  • Images that pop-into your mind.

  • Any thoughts you may have when looking at the cards.

Let’s return to the Fool again. Say, for example, that as I was looking at the card I kept getting the phrase “don’t worry” in my mind. The moment I look at the card I instantly think “don’t worry”.

That is not my imagination! It’s a message from Spirit not to worry!

Now I can add on what I received via my psychic senses, the phrase “don’t worry”, to what I got from steps one and two.

Fits very well with the theme of being carefree and optimism doesn’t it? I might say that my Spirit guides don’t want me to worry and fret over the situation but be as carefree as the Fool and have a positive outlook on what lies before me.
