How Building an Altar Can Heal Your Chakras

How Building an Altar Can Heal Your Chakras

Today's article is a guest blog post written by Siobhan Johnson, witch and tarot reader extraordinaire. I'm excited to feature her on my website and to share her insightful words with you!

An altar is simply a place where magic happens. It’s a tiny part of sacred space where you can do any kind of spiritual or magical work that you wish. An altar is a little oasis in a busy life - which is why they are perfect for balancing or healing your chakras.

There are many things you can do to balance a chakra - meditation, colour therapy, incense, essential oil, crystals… The list goes on. An altar can help you do all of those things, by providing you with a space to keep and use those items, and the headspace to do so in a calm and controlled manner. Built correctly, an altar will help balance a chakra simply by being gazed upon - utilizing forms and colours associated with the chakra will help to heal it.

A simple chakra altar can be nothing more than a shelf with a piece of an appropriately coloured cloth cast over it. If you spend the time, you can build a piece of sacred space that delights many of your senses - sight, smell, and even sound can be built into your altar work.

The mere act of building an altar with help to heal you, in the same way that some cultures build mandalas, or labyrinths. Don’t rush your altar - if you don’t have the ‘right’ items, wait a while. You can often make something that will fit, or re-purpose something that you already have in your home. Nature is a great place to fit appropriate altar items, and so are second-hand stores.

You should only build an altar for each chakra. Don’t overload yourself by taking on too much at once. Work with a single altar until you are ready to move on and replace it. If you have healed all your chakras, but want to streamline your daily or weekly balancing practice, then you can build small versions of all seven if you wish.

There are a few things that traditionally go on an altar - a focal point, usually an image or a statue. A candle. A representation of nature or a particular element. Make sure that when you add things like fruits, flowers, candle or crystals that the containers you put these things in to display them are also symbolic or representational of the chakra.

Balancing Your Root Chakra

The colour of the root chakra is red, so any red items will be beneficial. Start with a red cloth, and add in items such as a bowl of fresh earth, or a root of some kind. Photographs, drawings or statues of trees, especially roots, are a perfect addition to a root chakra altar. Images or statues of famous homemakers like Mrs Beeton will be beneficial here. Any containers you use should also be red, and if you can find some made out of natural red coloured clay or wood, those would be excellent. Add in any root chakra crystals or a holder for your root chakra incense.

Use items that are orange, as this is the colour of the sacral chakra. Orange fruits like persimmon or peach are really good. You should choose either images of beautiful sexual acts and/or images of beautiful artwork, or image of famous artists. Containers on a sacral chakra altar should be beautiful, and unusual - choose beauty over function for a sacral chakra altar.

You can start a solar plexus altar with images or statues of people engaged in athletic pursuits or dancing. You can even build a tiny one inside of a sweet tin and carry it around with you to build an energy of industrious activity. Images of people working, or of famous business people are also a good focal points. Natural elements can include fruits like citrus.

Balancing Your Throat Chakra

Sound is really important for the throat chakra, so if you only play music for one altar, make it this one. Any images should be of people singing, reciting speeches, poetry or spoken word. Focal points could be images of skies, or famous poets, authors or singers. Any containers should be curved. If you can add things like bells or singing bowls, that would be even better. Natural objects could be blue flowers or fruits, or even blue blown glass. Glass blowers have some powerful throat chakras! The colour of the throat chakra is blue.

Throat Chakra Crystals:

  • Kyanite

  • Turquoise

  • Aquamarine

Throat Chakra Scents:

  • Allspice

  • Spearmint

  • Ylang ylang

Balancing Your Third Eye Chakra

The brow chakra governs our third eye, so any magical stuff you’ve been itching to use should be placed on this altar. Scrying mirrors or bowls, wands, dolls - magical items lend an aura of power to this altar. Whilst you can use individual Tarot or Oracle cards on other altars as focal points, you can use the whole deck for your Brow Altar. If not, choose images of priests and priestesses, people reading fortunes, Deities, Spirits etc. Whatever gets you in an otherworldly mood, use that. Images of starscapes are also useful here. Containers should also ‘feel’ magical - if that means esoteric symbols to you, go for it. If that means unicorns and glitter to you, awesome. The point of the Brow Chakra altar is to help you to look past what ‘should’ be there and focus on what is. The colour of the brow chakra is indigo.

Third Eye Chakra Crystals:

  • Sodalite

  • Amethyst

  • Kyanite

Third Eye Chakra Scents:

  • Juniper

  • Rosemary

  • Sandalwood

Balancing Your Crown Chakra

The Crown chakra governs our sense of connection to the rest of the Universe, so all of the items on your altar (or as many as possible) should be gifts. These don’t have to be formal gifts given to you by other humans - they can also be things that appeared in the right place at the right time, as if sent by Spirit. If you don’t own appropriate things that you have been given, decorate the altar in photographs of items that you have been given, or times in your life when you felt connected and belonging. It doesn’t matter if these people are still in your life or not - what matters is building a feeling of connection. As well as gifts, you might find it useful to add in something that represents where you live, and the mix of communities that you are a part of. Hand-me-downs are useful for this. Where you live now, your family, your heritage, your workplace, your social group, perhaps a hobby group - a Crown Chakra altar is less about specific arcane items and more about the connection.

Choose also some images or statues that represent your view of the Universe - whether as energy, or a Higher Power, or a specific named Deity. You can also choose images of your idea of a ‘good’ sovereign - King Arthur is a good one, unless you know of an historical ruler that strikes your fancy. Images of crowns are also a good item to include. A big mistake most people make when working with the Crown Chakra is to focus solely on opening up to higher energies of the Universe - without a strong foundation all that energy just kinds of hits you in the head and doesn’t ‘stick’. You need to build a strong Earthly foundation to be able to properly use the energy needed or expressed by your Crown Chakra. The colour of the Crown Chakra is purple.

Crown Chakra Crystals:

  • Selenite

  • Clear quartz

  • Purple agate

Crown Chakra Scents:

  • Lavender

  • Frankincense
