5 Signs You're Ready to Go Pro as a Card Reader or Psychic

You’ve been interested in spirituality and divination for a while and you’ve been reading tarot cards, oracle cards or have been working on developing your psychic abilities.

You’d love to have your own spiritual business one day and you’re thinking of becoming a professional tarot card reader, oracle card reader, or psychic medium but you have no idea if you’re ready.

You have all these doubts swirling in your mind:

Am I good enough to start charging?

What if I’m not accurate?

Can I really provide the level of depth people are looking for?

You feel like you’re mired in self-doubt and so you hold yourself back because you just don’t know if you’re good enough to start asking for money for your time and services.

If that’s the case, then today’s article is for you! We’ll go through the 5 things you need to know and be able to do to become a pro.

When people pay you for a reading they expect you to know what you’re doing! So you gotta make sure that you have learned everything you need to in order to deliver a reading smoothly.

1. You’re able to do a reading without consulting the book

The biggest thing we need to address is do you have the ability to go pro?

If you’re at the stage where you’re not able to complete a reading without looking up a card meaning in the book or checking your study notes then you’re just not ready and you need to spend more time working on being able to do that.

Just try to imagine how it appears to a client when they pay for a professional reading and they show up, only to see you digging through your notes. It doesn’t look good, does it?

2. You’re able to do a reading without freezing up

This one is closely related to the previous point. I know what it’s like when you’re learning tarot, you’re trying to do a reading, and you’re pretty sure you know the card meanings but when you do a reading your brain’s just like “huh?”.

You see this huge spread, especially if you’ve decided to do the Celtic Cross, and you don’t even know where to begin or what to say. Or even worse, you forget a card meaning!

This applies to psychics too. You can get intuitive guidance for yourself but when faced with another person you feel as if nothing’s coming and you don’t have enough to say.

What do you do in those situations? As a pro, you will have the mental tool set to enable you to be able to tackle those kinds of situations as well as the practice you need to make sure you don’t freeze up.

Again, just think about it from a potential client’s point of view. Imagine you pay for an intuitive reading and, regardless of what tools they’re using, the reader is super vague and seems like she doesn’t know how to answer your question. Is that money well spent? No!

The best way to practice is to read for someone that you know absolutely nothing about because that simulates what you’ll experience as a professional.

3. You’ve done free practice readings for strangers

Okay, so a big part of getting you to the point where you can do a reading confidently and without freezing up is doing practice readings.

And I’m not just talking about readings for friends or family, but for people you don’t know. The best way to practice is to read for someone that you know absolutely nothing about because that simulates what you’ll experience as a professional.

You need to go on Facebook, go on Reddit, and create a post saying that you’d like to do practice readings and you’re open for questions. Or, if someone’s posted a question on a free reading thread, you take their question.

That is how I did it. I went on Reddit and I did free readings. It’s great because you can test out your skills in a more or less real world scenario and get feedback from people.

That’s a big thing! Initially you’ll be so scared, so doubtful in your own abilities, that you may not even speak up about all of your intuitive impressions.

Then, someone you did a reading for comments and tells you that you were accurate. That feeling is amazing, especially the first time! And as you do it more you feel more comfortable expressing yourself and you’ll get more feedback.

The more people you have that tell you that your reading resonated with them, the more confident you will feel about it.

And then when you do your first paid reading, while it’ll still be scary, it won’t be quite so scary that you totally freeze!

You can’t force someone to come up with a well-formulated question by themselves. You need to be the translator. You need to be able understand their situation and form it into a question to work with.

4. You know how to turn someone’s situation or problem into a question

This is a pretty huge one. Normally when people come to you for a reading they don’t really know exactly what they want to know. They won’t have a pre-formulated question. Not in the way we do as readers.

When people come to you they will, if they’re like me, tell you about the general situation of concern, or they might not even give you a question and just say they want to know about their love life.

You need to be able to handle both types of people. Like I said, rarely will someone come to you with a set question.

Why is it so important? Several reasons:

  1. If the question is vague the answer will be vague. So if you don’t know what specifically to ask, the whole reading will come across as muddled, generic, and inaccurate. You won’t feel like you’re at your best.
  2. You can’t force someone to come up with a well-formulated question. You need to be the translator, understand their situation, and word the question. You can confirm it with them - “The question I’ll be asking is this, does that work for you?” - but you’re the one that has to shape it into the right form.
  3. You need to be able to select the right spread, pendulum chart, or know what to focus on or tune into. Your job is to take that overall situation and turn it into a question and based on that question perform a reading using the right tools.

The way you do that is by practising reading for other people. Preferably, people who you don’t know and who are not tarot experts.

Another way you can do it is just come up with some fictional situations. Create a character in your head and give her a problem, then practice turning her problem into a question you can work with for your reading.

5. You’re able to answer the question with enough detail

A person is coming to you for guidance. They’re expecting you to give them some insight that can help them illuminate their situation on a deeper level and decide which path to take.

You need to be able to answer their question with enough depth to actually help them. That means you need to know how to get the maximum amount of info whether it be from your cards, other tools, or your psychic abilities.

It is not okay to give very shallow level answers that may apply to anyone. Plus, if they pay you for 45 minutes and you finish it in 15 minutes, then you haven’t gone into as much depth as you could have.

If you’re thinking that it’s not possible to do one question in that amount of time, you’re wrong!

I have spent almost an hour breaking down a single spread in various ways and addressing follow up questions

Part of that involves knowing the steps to follow to perform a reading and being able to either select a spread, create a spread on the fly, or use the no-spread intuitive method like I do. Plus, make room for channelling their spirit guides or other intuitive information.

It all boils down to leaving the customer feeling satisfied and able to tackle their life’s problems.

If you feel you’re not yet able to do that then don’t rush! Take your time getting practice and learning how to do all these things before asking for money.

Self-doubt is not based on your actual skill level but it’s based on your fear! If you’re waiting for a day when you magically won’t be afraid anymore you will be waiting for a long time! Just take the plunge because it will never feel like the right time.

Overcoming self-doubt and trusting yourself

What if you have actually learned to do all of the above? Through books, courses, practice, whatever, but you just feel scared to make the leap to charging money?

I know this is a huge problem and huge barrier because it is freaking scary to do a reading for someone else, especially your first paid one!

What if I’m wrong? What if I’m not accurate? What if I just go blank or don’t know what to say despite all my hard work?

When you feel that way just look back at the readings you’ve done for yourself and practice readings you’ve done for others. Were you wrong? Did you mess it up? Probably not!

It all boils down to mindset here. That self-doubt is not based on your actual skill level but it’s based on your fear! The fear is holding you back!

If you’re waiting for a day when you magically won’t be afraid anymore you will be waiting for a long time! The nervousness and fear won't go away, not fully anyway. It gets better the more readings you’ve done but you will still feel a little nervous.

You have to just take the plunge, just try it out, and I’m sure you will do a lot better than you thought you would!

By the way, I’ve written an entire article all about overcoming self-doubt and trusting the message so if this is your main hurdle then I encourage you to read it!

So what are your biggest hurdles? What do you feel is holding you back from going pro?
