4 Reasons Why Tarot Storytelling is Essential to Get Accurate Readings

4 Reasons Why You Need to Learn the Art of Tarot Storytelling

I bought my first deck without knowing anything about the tarot and just relied on the guidebook that came with it. You probably did too.

You looked through the cards, tried out some sample spreads, and as you did so you referred to the book to help you interpret it. This is normal.

The next step is usually getting a desire to learn more about tarot and watching a YouTube series and getting some books teaching you about the Rider-Waite system and card meanings. Let’s not diminish this step it is a massive undertaking in and of itself!

But then what? You just plateau for a while. You practice doing readings and you feel like it seems so generic, like you’re still just cutting and pasting the card meanings into these neat little boxes.

Tarot does not always fit into neat little boxes! There is a whole world of extra depth and deeper meaning just waiting to be uncovered, that will help you truly hone your tarot reading abilities.

There is a story hidden in your spread unique to every querant just waiting to be told. Once you learn how to find and uncover that story, you’ll really be able to read like the pros and get that extra level of clarity and guidance you need from the cards.

Tarot storytelling is the art of connecting individual cards together in order to piece together a story unique to the querent’s question and situation.

What is Tarot Storytelling?

Okay so let’s back up a little. What even is ‘tarot storytelling’? What am I even going on about?

Tarot storytelling is the art of connecting individual cards together in order to piece together a story unique to the querent's question and situation.

So we are going beyond individual card meanings that are separated from each other in these neat little boxes. We want to connect the card together, connect the dots, and find the story hidden in the spread.

What is the story we are trying to uncover? The story is the greater message that the universe is trying to tell you via the cards.

The cards are like individual scenes within a movie or book. Tarot storytelling is learning to look beyond individual scenes and follow the plot.

1. Generic Card Meanings Don’t Apply to Everyone the Same Way

 The Divination Funnel

I already talked about the divination funnel in my blog post about how to dowse using a pendulum but let’s just go over it one more time.

The divination funnel shows you how information from the world of Spirit filters down to you. There are various levels of access and connection here. When you practice any form of divination to get answers you are accessing some level of this funnel.

The info starts at source and then filters down through the collective consciousness > your higher self > your unconscious mind > your subconscious mind > your conscious mind.

When you read tarot you’re accessing your subconscious mind, which is in turn connected to higher parts of the funnel. All that good stuff is unique to you.

Let’s say you have two people, person A and person B. They both do a tarot reading and they both get a certain card. For argument’s sake let’s say it was Death in the past position. They recently went through a life change or ending.

The generic meaning may be the same but persons A and B are two separate people with completely different life stories and situations. The question, context, and surrounding cards are different.

Moreover, even if by some magic both people get the exact same cards in the exact same situation. It will still mean something different to each one. We all may be connected at the collective consciousness level but below that, it’s completely unique to you.

When you learn to see the greater story of your reading, you can weave a narrative unique to each person, that does them and their situation justice.

2. The cards you draw are interconnected and not standalone

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. I see the cards as living scenes. Snapshots of life within the world of tarot that capture a single moment.

The thing is, when you do a reading you’re not just getting individual and completely separate scenes. All the cards in the reading connect to each other as part of a larger movie. They’re interconnected.

That’s why I find it so hard to stay within the bounds of fixed spread positions. I notice that, for example, one card looks like it’s pointing to another one in the spread, or that the same mountain appears in 2-3 cards.

And it’s not just visual cues here. The cards were meant to be read in the context of other cards that surround it.

For example, Nine of Swords and The Star is a lot more hopeful and positive than Nine of Swords and the Devil. It’s just one card but see how much of a difference it makes in the interpretation.

Tarot storytelling is learning how to make those connections.

3. Your spread holds a bigger story that’s waiting to be told

So we’ve already talked about using the spread to create a unique story for the querent and how generic meanings don’t really apply the same way to everyone. Let’s dig into the concept of story a little more.

You see, the spread holds within it a much bigger story than you think. There are layers upon layers of hidden information within the spread that, once you find it, will add so much depth to your readings.

In order to perform a reading, you normally look at the card meanings and spread positions. But there is more info waiting to be found! A whole lot more!

Information like:

  • The balance of majors, each suit, and courts
  • Tarot numerology and repeating numbers
  • The balance of elements in the spread
  • Movement
  • Directionality
  • Dominant colours
  • Repeating symbols

And that is not even considering what happens when you pay attention to your intuition. You have all this extra stuff PLUS your own gut feelings nudging you to go with one interpretation vs another.

Tarot storytelling is the art of finding these hidden pieces of information and connecting them to form a story.  If you can do that I am sure you’ll blow people away with your readings.

4. Your Spirit Team is Trying to Reach You via the Hidden Messages in the Cards

The fourth and final reason why tarot storytelling is so important to learn comes back to why we do readings in the first place.

I read tarot because I want answers from the universe to help me make soul-guided decisions. When I read for others, I do so to help them do the same. That’s the whole point, isn’t it?

You assume that you have to invoke the universe or spirit guides to gain their help and advice but they are there! Help is at hand and they are always sending you signs to guide you! Way more than you can even consciously perceive!

In the TV show, The Good Place, there is an episode towards the end of season 2 where Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason are trying to escape the guys from the bad place. They think that Michael has betrayed them only he’s left them some subtle clues about what to do. Eventually, they figure it out, of course.

Eleanor says to Michael that they picked up the clues he left them. All 4 clues! Michael then says that he actually left them 1200 clues but due to their limited human perception they didn’t pick it up.

The minute he said that I laughed and laughed thinking that is totally what it’s like for my spirit team! They are always there trying to help us be on track and they are always sending us so many signs that we totally miss!

You think that you need a special spread to talk to your spirit team or universe at large? Remember the divination funnel? You are accessing that info any time you do a reading.

Why is it that if you see 222 on the clock you immediately notice but when you get the High Priestess, the 2 of Pentacles, and the 2 of Cups in the same reading it’s not important?

Why is it that if you see a hawk flying above you’re like, OMG it’s a sign or OMG it’s my spirit animal! But when you do a reading and see a hawk in one or more cards it flies over your head?

It is all important! The universe is always sending your signs and messages through whatever means necessary and that includes the tarot!

Understanding how to spot hidden details and make connections between cards through tarot storytelling will enable you to pick up on a higher percentage of messages your higher self and guides are trying to send you.

They need you to be able to pick up all of the signs they send you and that is arguably, the biggest reason of them all to learn this skill.
