10 Lessons from the Minor Arcana: The Suit of Wands

10 Lessons from the Minor Arcana: the Suit of Wands and Wands Tarot Cheatsheet!

This post is part of a blog post series exploring the tarot card meanings through storytelling.

For the major arcana, the story is told from the point of view of the Fool who is undertaking his journey through the arcana. The rest of the posts are from the point of view of another character who has heard about the Fool's Journey and goes on a journey of her own.

If you've already read the previous posts in this series you'll know that we've already completed our fictional Fool's Journey through the major arcana and we're continuing our journey through the land of tarot with a new protagonist, the Traveller.

Today we begin our journey through the minor arcana as Traveller visits the Kingdom of Wands!

If this is your first time here, start at the beginning. The major arcana, minor arcana, and court cards can also be read as stand-alone sections as well but for maximum benefit I recommend going in order.

Otherwise, welcome back and let's continue with our journey!

The minor arcana represent the everyday world and daily life. Each suit has its own personality and culture that represents a certain area of life.

Wands and the Element of Fire

Okay, so before we begin the story, I just want to spend a few moments discussing the nature of the suit of wands and what it's all about.

We've already gone through the major arcana so we know that majors represent larger forces, soul themes, and archetypes. Those cards represent the hero's journey to enlightenment. It's sort of like the land of magic and gods, and represents the higher element of spirit.

What about the suits? Well those are four material elemental kingdoms. They represent the everyday world and daily life. Each kingdom has its own personality and culture that represents a certain area of life.

Wands represents the element of fire. What do you think of when you think of fire?

  • Passion
  • Creativity
  • Explosive energy
  • Inspiration
  • Drive

As a kingdom it is full of passionate, driven, and dynamic movers-and-shakers. The wands kingdom embodies these qualities within us.

When you see wands in a reading it reflects that side of you and your career, passions, and ambitions.

Right, now let's dive in to the story shall we?

Ace of Wands

Lesson of the Ace of Wands

Let your path be guided by your creative gifts, your passions, and your drive. Recognise and embrace your personal power.

Ace of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

You're standing in a field of yellow flowers as vast as the eye can see. Where am I?

You spend a few moments getting your bearings and walking through the field. What is this place? Last you remembered, you were at home in your bed. What sorcery is this?

You see a light in the distance, dim at first, but then burning brighter and brighter. You were standing stock still but it looked like the light was moving towards you! Sorcery, indeed!

You panicked and tried to move only to find yourself unable to do so. Damn and blast! What is going on?

As the light got closer you saw that it was a long, wooden, wand with a glowing orange crystal attached to it. The wand zoomed towards you and you put your hands in front of your face to defend yourself.

You felt nothing. Confused, you lowered your hands. The wand had stopped in front of you and was hovering in the air. A bright yellow-orange flame burned around the crystal.

You tentatively extended your hand towards it, and when nothing happened, you went ahead and grabbed the wand.

A surge of fiery energy flowed through your veins as soon as you touched the wand. You were filled with a sense of passion and energy. It was as if you could do anything!

Then, you saw a vision of a kingdom of the flamekeepers. A kingdom of passion, inspiration, and fire.

You took a shaky breath as the vision faded away and you were once again in the field.

"I am the Guardian of the Kingdom of Wands, young traveller. You are invited to my kingdom" said a voice, seemingly coming from the wand itself!

"What are you?" you asked.

"I am the gift of fire. I am the creative energy, the bolt of inspiration, and the personal power that lies within all humans" it said. "I am the key to the Kingdom of Wands. Come and enter my place of fire"

Suddenly, you were back in your room. You gasped and sat bolt upright. What was that? Was it a dream? You looked down and right next to you, was the very same wand from your dream!

This must be a sign! You had heard of the Fool and his journey and dearly wanted to go on a journey of your own.

You beamed as you picked up your wand. "Alright, magic wand, I shall journey to your kingdom first" you whispered.

Two of Wands

Lesson of the Two of Wands

Visualise your desire and make actionable plans to go after it. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Two of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

Well, the wand wasn't lying! You had presented it to the guards in the capital city and they let you through! You marvelled at the dynamic energy of this place.

People bustled about, striding to and fro with a great purpose and others shouted loudly in the market as they competed to sell their wares. They seemed to thrive on the competition and sheer energy here.

Some people passionately argued with each other, embraced each other, or both. Everywhere you looked there seemed to be torches burning and the colour red dominated.

This truly was the kindgom of the flamekeepers.

You wiped the sweat off your brow as you walked up under the hot sun up set of stone steps to the battlements. You wanted to get a good look at the city from a higher vantage point.

You reached the top of the stairs and you stopped to catch your breath a moment. Probably need to do more exercise.

After a few moments you looked around and saw that you weren't alone. There was a man in a red cloak, standing by the battlements. He held a wand with his left hand and a globe with the other. To his right was another wand and he seemed to be staring out to see longingly.

You tentatively approached the man. "Excuse me, I hope I'm not being rude" you began. "I'm new to these parts and I don't know much about your culture. Can you tell me what it is you're doing?"

The man slowly turned his head to meet your gaze. There was a fierce intensity in his eyes and a somber expression on his face. "All my life I have lived within these walls. I've followed in the footsteps of my father and learned everything he had to teach me. I want to start a venture of my own. I come up here to contemplate and make plans"

You were surprised at the fierce determination in his voice. Obviously this meant a lot to him. "I can understand the feeling of wanting to set out on a journey of your own. That's why I'm here" you said.

"Well then, you're one step ahead of me" said the man, smiling at you. "The world is our oyster! We can do anything we set out hearts too. All we need to is make plans to put the project in place and trust that it will bear fruit" he said. He paused for a moment. "I have so many ideas. They will bear fruit. I know it."

You smiled at put a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure they will, my friend"

Three of Wands

Lesson of the Three of Wands

Be patient and trust that the action you have taken will produce results. The energy you have put out will return to you.

Three of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

A week later, you went looking for your new friend, the man in the red cloak. You found him standing on a cliff, looking out to see. He still had a wand in his left hand but this time there were two other wands behind him.

You walked up to him. "You've acquired an extra wand I see"

He nodded. "As we go about our journey through life the wands show up and disappear as needed. They represent different stages in our journey"

"Alright" you said. "So you have three wands now. What does that mean?"

The man gestured out at the ocean. "I'm waiting for my ships to return. Last time we met I was resolving to take action and making plans for my venture. I have since acquired some ships and sent them out to buy wine from the Kingdom of Cups. I know they will sell really well here"

"Sounds like a good idea to me" You nodded. "So you've taken the first steps to implement your new project and now you're waiting for the results?"

"Yes, that's exactly right" said the man. "This waiting is killing me!"

"Patience my friend" you said, with a smile. "Trust that the action you have taken will bear results. The energy you have put out into the world will return to you. You just need a bit of patience, that's all"

Four of Wands

Lesson of the Four of Wands

Take some time out to celebrate your stability, joy, and happiness with friends and family. It’s not worth doing if you can’t enjoy it.

Four of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

You were now standing in an open field, sipping a glass of Cups red wine. Your friend's venture proved a great success and to celebrate he threw a party for the whole city!

Four maidens danced beneath a canopy held up by four wands. They laughed and twirled in the golden afternoon sunlight.

"Join us!" one of them said. "It's time to celebrate!"

You out your wine glass down and danced with the four maidens, whiling the afternoon away with music and laughter.

That was the most fun you had in a long time! You stopped to catch your breath, stepping away from the four wands.  Your red-cloaked friend approached you, bringing someone with him. "Traveller! It's good to see you having so much fun! Sometimes it's necessary to stop and celebrate a successful venture with good friends!" he said, clapping you on the shoulder excitedly.

You smiled at his enthusiasm. "Indeed"

"Let me introduce to you my friend, the dragonrider" he said, gesturing to the man next to him. "He's part of the city's defence"

"Well met, my lady" said the dragonrider.

"It's a pleasure to meet you" you said with a smile. "So you're a dragonrider, huh? That sounds exciting"

The dragonrider grinned. "Exciting is one way to describe it! Why don't you come and see for yourself? We're holding a tournament tomorrow, a mock battle. I'd love to see you there!" he said.

A mock battle between dragons? You definitely wouldn't want to miss that! "I'll be there" you said.

Five of Wands

Lesson of the Five of Wands

Sometimes, a little bit of sport and friendly competition is needed to keep things fresh. Conflict breeds inspiration.

Five of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

You stood on the battlements with your friend and members of the guard, waiting for the tournament to begin. Almost the whole city was here!

Most people found a good vantage point on the rooftops of various buildings around the city. Your friend knows the city guard very well so he was able to get you a spot right in front of the action.

A trumpet sounded. The tournament was starting! Five dragonriders took to the sky atop their dragons, each one holding a wand.

Those were the biggest creatures you had seen in your entire life! It must take a lot of courage to be a dragonrider.

The dragons circled each other at first and then, finally, the red one swooped in to make the first attack. Within a few moments the dragons were snarling and snapping at each other.

Everyone seemed to pick one dragonrider as their favourite. Some cheered when the blue one gained the advantage, others chose the yellow, the green, or the purple.

Your friend naturally chose the red one to support. You let out a cry of triumph and raised you hands in the air as the red dragon bit the blue one, signalling its defeat. Luckily the dragon didn't look like it was seriously hurt. It just roared in anger and flew away with its rider.

There was a whisper in the crowd. Looks like people were taking bets now.

"The red one better win, otherwise I owe the captain of the guard a pretty sum of coin!" said your friend.

The battle went on for a few more minutes. The red defeated the purple and the green dragon too. It was just the red and the yellow now.

The air was tense. At first it looked like the red was going to win, prompting a cheer from team red. Then, at the last minute, the yellow gained the advantage and scored a bite. The crowd went wild!

Your friend swore.

"Looks like you'll be needing to pay up after all" you said.

"It's all good" began your friend. "Sometimes a little bit of sport and friendly competition is needed to keep spirits high" he said.

Six of Wands

Lesson of the Six of Wands

It’s okay to bask in the glory you have received for a job well done and to enjoy your success.

six of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

There was an air of jubilation in the city following he victory of the yellow dragon and his rider. You were now standing on the main thoroughfare with your friend, observing the celebrations.

"What's going on?" you ask, leaning towards him.

"There's to be a parade" he said. "You're here are the right time. If you had chosen to visit any other time you would have missed it. The Dragonrider Tournament is the most anticipated sporting event of the year! There's always a parade for the victor afterwards"

You were about to respond when you heard a cheer from the far end of the road.

"The victor is approaching!" said your friend.

The crowd roared as the dragonrider came into view. He was clad in gold plate mail and sat proudly atop a black stallion, carrying a wand adorned with a laurel. The people immediately following him held 5 other wands.

The dragonrider beamed, basking in the adoration of the masses. He held his wand up high and a cheer erupted in the crowd.

"He's certainly enjoying his fame isn't he?" you said.

"The crowd will have forgotten about him within the next few days. Let him have his moment, I say. Sometimes, it's okay to bask in the glory you have received for a job well done"

Seven of Wands

Lesson of the Seven of Wands

It’s important to stand your ground, especially when you are in a position of advantage.

Seven of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

Several days had passed since the tournament and the parade. You'd been staying with your red-cloaked friend but he seemed too busy with his business ventures to show you around. You didn't want to inconvenience him so you thought you'd explore on your own for a bit.

You were on the outskirts of the city now, enjoying an invigorating hike up the hill adjacent to the city. It was a cloudy day. You hoped it wouldn't rain, the last thing you wanted was to come home with muddy boots and soaking wet!

You continued walking and reached the top of the hill. You heard sounds of a struggle. Looks like you weren't alone. What was going on?

You walked in the direction of the sounds. You widened your eyes in surprise. There was a group of six men attacking a lone warrior! The warrior had no where to go but held his position on the high ground and fought valiantly.

You ran forward and called you. "Hey! Leave him alone!" You didn't have any weapons but you couldn't just let him be beaten up by a bunch of outlaws!

"Stay back, traveller. I have the matter under control" said the man, confidently.

You didn't know what to else to say or do so you did as he said and stayed where you were. The man must be an experienced fighter. He stood his ground with grim determination and picked off his attackers one by one with great skill.

Within a few shot moments all six of them lay unconscious on the ground.

You chose this moment to approach him. "That was impressive! You're much braver than I. I would have given up in two seconds!"

The man nodded. "That's just because you don't have experience in such things. You're a traveller, right?" he asked.

"Yes. That obvious, is it?"

"A little bit" The warrior chuckled. "I will say this, traveller, it's important to stand your ground, especially when you are in a position of advantage" he said.

"That is sound advice" you said with a smile.

Eight of Wands

Lesson of the Eight of Wands

Whatever it is you feel the need to do, go ahead and do it, because the wheels have been set in motion. It’s time to move quickly.

Eight of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

You started to walk down the hill after you parted ways with the warrior. It was still afternoon and you had plenty of time but you had no desire to remain at the summit of the hill for much longer. The warrior already shared his lesson with you.

You took a deep breath, enjoying, the peace and quiet, and looked up at the sky. Then, you saw it. Eight wands shooting through the clouds at great speed! They were all moving at the same speed, in the same direction, as if guided by a single purpose.

You stopped to watch the wands pass by. There was a strange energy in the air. It was active, dynamic, and electric.

Where before you felt restless, you now suddenly felt like everything was in flow. If the eight wands were any indication, then things would move quickly from here on out.

You couldn't help but feel that you were reaching the climax of your journey through the Wands Kingdom.

Nine of Wands

Lesson of the Nine of Wands

Always watch your back and mark your boundaries or others will mark them for you.

Nine of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

Mere moments after the eight wands passed your field of view, you came across a woman standing vigil in front of a fence marked by eight wands driven into the ground. They can't be the very same wands you just saw, can they?

The woman was holding a ninth wand in her hand and had a stoic, resolute, expression on her face as if waiting for some opponent. The clothes she wore were familiar. Come to think of it, her outfit looked a lot like what the city guard wore.

"Well met" you said, approaching the woman cautiously.

"State your purpose, traveller, or leave me be. I have a job to do and I will not suffer any distraction" she said, gruffly.

"Forgive me, but I simply wish to know what it is you are doing?" you asked.

She looked at you as if you were a complete idiot. "Standing guard, obviously" she said.

Okay, this was going to be a little difficult, clearly. "Against what?"

The woman let out a long suffering sigh. "I am the Protector of the Kingdom of Wands" she began. "Long have me and my kin been standing guard against enemies. No one else will do it so I must. I am the first line of defence"

"But there is no enemy" you said. "The Wands Kingdom has not gone to war a generation"

"Yes, and my father fought in that war. He was severely wounded as were many good citizens. The enemy was defeated but there is no guarantee that they will not arise again and when they do, I will be waiting" The woman glanced at you for a moment, sizing you up. "You look like you can handle yourself in a tough situation but here are a some tips for you, traveller: number one, never give up, and number two, always watch your back!"

"Sound advice" you nodded.

"Good. Now leave me be. You have kept me from my vigil for long enough" she said and resumed her defensive stance.

Ten of Wands

Lesson of the Ten of Wands

Share the burden, lighten your load, and learn to delegate. You don’t need to do it all alone.

Ten of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

You left the hill and returned to the main road towards the city. The sun was beginning to set, bathing the sky in pink and orange hues.

As you walked down the rocky path, you couldn't shake the feeling that your time here was drawing to a close. You couldn't put it into words exactly, but it just felt like it was time to make a move again.

After a few minutes on the road, you saw a figure up ahead. It was your red-cloaked friend! His shoulders were slumped and he appeared to be carrying ten wands on his shoulder.

You ran up to him. "Wait up! It's me!" you called out.

He stopped and waited for you to catch up. "Traveller. It's good to see you again" he said, without enthusiasm. His muscles seemed to be straining under the load and he had a blank, far-away look on his face.

"You don't look well, my friend, I'm sorry to say" you said. "What's wrong?"

"It's all gotten a bit much for me, I'm afraid" he said, with a heavy sigh. "I really thought I could do this alone but..." he hesitated, his voice wavering. "But I just can't" he said, finally.

You smiled at him in sympathy. "That's what friends are for" you said, warmly. "Come, give me five of those wands and we'll carry them back to your home together, shall we? You don't need to do everything alone. Sometimes it's important to share the burden and lighten your load"

His face lit up with a genuine smile. "You'd truly help me? I'm touched" he said. "Alright, let's do it together" He gave you five of the wands and looked visibly relieved as he handed them to you.

Together, you walked back to the city.
